The Boise State University football team received its highest ranking in school history on Saturday (Aug. 21) when the Associated Press selected the Broncos third in its preseason top 25 poll.
The Broncos received 1,336 points and one first place vote. Boise State's lone first place vote came from Joe Giglio of The Times & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Defending national champion Alabama as expected was in the No. 1 spot with the Crimson Tide receiving 1,491 points and 54 first place votes. Alabama was also the No. 1 selection in the USA Today Coaches' preseason poll.
Ohio State was No. 2 in the AP poll with 1,400 points and three first place votes. The two remaining first place votes went to No. 5 Texas and No. 7 Oklahoma. Florida rounded out the top five at the No. 4 spot with 1,237 points.
Boise State's previous high ranking was No. 4 in the final 2009 AP and USA Today Coaches' Polls.
The Broncos were picked No. 5 in the coaches' preseason poll earlier this month.
Boise State opens the season on Sept. 6 (Monday) at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland against Virginia Tech. The Hokies were selected No. 10 in the preseason poll and No. 6 in the coaches' poll.
One other 2010 Boise State opponent was also selected in the AP preseason poll with Oregon State coming in at No. 24. The Broncos will host the Beavers on Sept. 25 (Saturday) in Boise State's first home game of the season.
